The Incompetent Manager and What is Peter’s Principle?

The idea behind Peter’s law is that “the managers always rise to the level of incompetence”. It suggests that when a person is good at their current position then they are usually promoted to another position in which they are not competent.

Another perspective of this principle is that the person stops getting promoted when they can’t do their job well anymore, hence making them incompetent at their new role.

It also can be said that we keep pushing the limits until things fall apart.

Peter’s principle can also be carried forward to other applications like

  1. You keep eating sugary and sweet dishes until you get diagnosed with diabetes or obesity.

  2. You only buy a new laptop after your old one isn’t good enough to get the work done anymore.

  3. You keep lifting heavy weights in gym until you get injured.
